TOKYO - Major electric utilities in Japan have completed or are planning upgrades to equipment at a total of 187 hydroelectric power plants between fiscal 2020 and 2030, a recent Kyodo News survey showed.

The move to repower hydropower plants, likely boosting total output by over 130,000 kilowatts, comes as the government aims to maximize the use of renewable energy alongside nuclear power to secure decarbonized power sources.
