TOKYO - The Nikkei stock index jumped more than 5 percent early Monday, surpassing 57,000 for the first time, after Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party scored a landslide victory in the House of Representatives election.
At 9:35 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 2,721.69 points, or 5.02 percent, from Friday to 56,975.37. The broader Topix index was up 116.38 points, or 3.15 percent, at 3,815.38, also climbing to a record intraday high.
