TOKYO - The Nikkei stock index rose over 3 percent early Tuesday after plunging the previous day on a surge in crude oil prices, as expectations for an early conclusion of the war in the Middle East grew following remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 1,402.08 points, or 2.66 percent, from Monday to 54,130.80. The broader Topix index was up 71.34 points, or 2.00 percent, at 3,647.18.
