BERLIN - German Bundesliga football club Freiburg on Wednesday announced the signing of Japanese midfielder Rihito Yamamoto from Sint-Truiden in the Belgian top-flight.

The 24-year-old, who played for Japan at the 2024 Paris Olympics, joined Sint-Truiden from J-League side Gamba Osaka in 2023 and has scored five goals this campaign.

He will team with Samurai Blue attacker Yuito Suzuki at Freiburg.

"Playing in the Bundesliga has always been a big goal of mine and of course I spoke to Yuito about Freiburg -- I only heard good things," Yamamoto said in a statement from the club.

"As a midfielder, I want to have an impact on the game and develop together with the team. I'm really looking forward to playing here."
