U.S. proposes extra tariffs of 12.5% for Japan, many other countries
WASHINGTON - The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is planning to impose additional tariffs of 12.5 percent on goods from China, Japan, South Korea and over 40 other countries, accusing them of not doing enough to ban the import of goods allegedly made with forced labor.
The proposal, released by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative late Tuesday, came after the Supreme Court in February invalidated Trump's far-reaching tariffs imposed under a 1970s-era emergency law, with his administration subsequently launching trade probes into what it viewed as unfair practices by U.S. trading partners.

Japan electronics retailers Yamada, Edion eye business integration: source
TOKYO - Yamada Holdings Co., Japan's largest consumer electronics retailer, and Edion Corp., another key player in the sector, are planning a business integration, a source familiar with the matter said Thursday.
Under the envisioned merger, their combined sales would reach around 2.5 trillion yen ($15.63 billion). They are considering setting up a holding company and putting the two retailers under its wing, the source said.

Trump says he will attend G7 summit in France

Trump made the announcement on social media even as U.S. relations with some European members of the group have become increasingly strained over the Iran war that he launched with Israel in late February.

N. Korean leader inspects new nuclear materials production facility: media
BEIJING - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called for the strengthening of the country's nuclear forces at an "exponential rate" as he inspected a newly operating nuclear materials production facility, state media reported Thursday.
A photo released at the same time suggested the facility may be used to enrich uranium. It is unclear where the facility is located.

Japan PM eyes Europe tour from June 13, visits to Britain, Italy, France
TOKYO - Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is considering embarking on a three-nation tour of Europe from June 13 to visit Britain, Italy and France, government sources said Wednesday.
Takaichi is expected to hold bilateral talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on June 14 and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni the following day, before attending the three-day Group of Seven summit in Evian, France, through June 17, the sources said.

Rubio says summit of U.S., Japan, Australia, India eyed by year-end
WASHINGTON - The leaders of the United States, Japan, Australia and India aim to hold a meeting of their so-called Quad grouping by the end of the year, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday.
In his testimony to the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Rubio added that the Quad summit might take place on the sidelines of another multilateral gathering in the Indo-Pacific region.

Director of Amnesty International Japan accused of workplace harassment
TOKYO - The executive director of the human rights organization Amnesty International Japan has been accused of workplace harassment by several employees, some of whom resigned or took leave due to the alleged conduct, the labor union said Wednesday.
The abuse of power, including verbal reprimands, began after the executive director took office in January last year, according to the union. Of the six staff members who reported experiencing harassment, one resigned and two took leave, it said.
