TOKYO - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 struck eastern Japan early Sunday, with a strong jolt felt in the capital Tokyo, the weather agency said.
The 2:00 a.m. quake originated in the southern part of Ibaraki Prefecture at a depth of about 70 kilometers, registering lower 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale in parts of the prefecture as well as in central Tokyo.
