OSAKA - Osaka's iconic Glico Running Man sign will undergo renovation, with a new version set to be unveiled in spring 2027, according to food maker Ezaki Glico Co.

The running man sign, which overlooks a canal in the western Japan city's famous Dotombori shopping and entertainment district, is the sixth version. The current version, installed in 2014, will no longer be displayed after Nov. 30, with revamp work to begin the following month.

The Glico sign, with a runner raising both arms, currently contains around 140,000 light-emitting diodes and is a popular spot for people to take photos. The company behind the landmark said the renewal was required due to the aging of the LEDs.

The image of a runner will be retained and LED lights will continue to be used in the new version, according to Ezaki Glico.

The first Glico sign was installed in 1935.
