SEOUL - Yonhap News Agency, South Korea's key newswire service, said Tuesday it is set to unveil an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant service to support news reporting, data analysis and fact-checking.

The new service, called "Yonhap LM," is a function included in the E-GENE system, a proprietary AI platform for news production support, which started development late last year.

Users can conduct joint reporting by sharing data, fact-check and analyze press conferences and interviews by connecting the agent with the speech-to-text (STT) service provided on the E-GENE platform, the company said.

The AI agent was created in a bid to improve the accuracy, speed and depth of news production. A beta launch of the service will be made available soon to Yonhap's journalists and editors, the media company added.

"Yonhap plans to serve as a bastion of trustworthy journalism by creating timely, accurate and in-depth content in an era where misinformation is rampant," said Hwang Dae-il, chief executive officer of the newswire. "We will use AI as a supporting tool to innovate reporting and production of news," he added.
