North Korea fired multiple missiles toward the Sea of Japan early Wednesday, the South Korean military said.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missiles were launched from the Sondok area in eastern North Korea, adding that South Korea and the United States were conducting detailed analysis of their specifications.
The military also said South Korea and the United States, which had closely monitored preparations for the launch, detected and tracked the missiles immediately after they were fired.
Last week, North Korea launched about 10 short-range ballistic missiles following two rounds of firings earlier in October.
Thursday's launch came amid escalated tensions between the two Koreas along the Military Demarcation Line in the Demilitarized Zone, stemming from a landmine explosion over a month ago that injured several South Korean soldiers.
South Korea made a proposal for holding military talks with North Korea late October, to which the North has not responded.
