OSAKA - Ukrainian sensation Aonishiki made a winning start in his bid for yokozuna promotion, outmaneuvering komusubi Wakamotoharu as the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament opened Sunday at Edion Arena Osaka.
There were mixed results for the current yokozuna on the opening day, however, with five-time Emperor's Cup winner Onosato suffering an upset against No. 1 maegashira Wakatakakage before Mongolian-born grand champion Hoshoryu defeated new komusubi Atamifuji.
