KYOTO - A temple in the western Japan prefecture of Kyoto, famous for its flowers, will begin nighttime illuminations of its hydrangea garden from Saturday.
Visitors to Mimurotoji Temple in Uji will be able to enjoy around 20,000 hydrangeas of roughly 50 varieties illuminated on weekends only through June 28 between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.
On Thursday night, blue, purple and pink hydrangeas were lit up at the hillside temple on a trial basis.
The hydrangeas bloomed earlier than usual this year and have already reached their peak, according to the temple.
"It has a different charm from daytime, so I hope visitors can find peace while looking at them," said Kokyo Itami, chief priest of the temple.
