NASHVILLE, Tennessee - Injured Japan attacker Takefusa Kubo will miss the team's upcoming World Cup match against Tunisia, the Japan Football Association said Thursday.

The 25-year-old was replaced in the 75th minute of their Group F opening draw with the Netherlands on Sunday after he went down on the pitch following a heavy challenge from Denzel Dumfries. Kubo ultimately left Dallas Stadium in a wheelchair.

His left knee injury was confirmed after a checkup on Monday and following a day off for the entire team, Kubo missed their team training on Wednesday at their base camp near Nashville, Tennessee.

The football association said Kubo will not be leaving the squad as he continues his recovery and rehabilitation, but no timeframe for his return or other details of the injury have been provided.

On Thursday, an association spokesperson said the Real Sociedad player was staying at the hotel and will not be traveling to Monterrey, Mexico, where Japan take on Tunisia on Saturday in their second game of the group stage.

Tunisia began their tournament with a 5-1 defeat to Sweden and replaced manager Sabri Lamouchi with his fellow Frenchman Herve Renard.
