Japanese heavy electric machinery maker worker detained in China

TOKYO - A Japanese employee of a major heavy electric machinery manufacturer's China unit has been detained in the country, possibly over attempts to take products related to rare earths overseas, for which Beijing has tightened export controls, sources familiar with the matter said Wednesday.

The detention could further escalate bilateral tensions already high over remarks Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi made last November on a Taiwan emergency.

Japan weather agency warns of flooding from heavy rains in northern Kyushu

TOKYO - Japan's weather agency is forecasting heavy rains Wednesday in the northern part of Kyushu, the country's southwestern main island, warning of potential flooding in low-lying areas and rivers overflowing their banks.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said early Wednesday that so-called linear rainbands could form in Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki and Kumamoto prefectures from the morning to a little past noon, with the region seeing a higher likelihood of rain-caused disasters.

Crowdfunding brings 100 mil. yen to cash-strapped Japan main opposition

TOKYO - The cash-strapped Centrist Reform Alliance, Japan's main opposition party, has raised over 100 million yen ($620,000) about one month after launching a crowdfunding campaign to broaden its support ahead of key local elections next year.

The party, formed by lawmakers from the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan and the Komeito party, has struggled financially since its crushing defeat in the February House of Representatives election reduced its seats from nearly 170 to just under 50, slashing its public subsidies.

Taipei tracks China's newest Fujian carrier passage through Taiwan Strait

TAIPEI - China's newest aircraft carrier, the Fujian, transited the Taiwan Strait on Tuesday, the Taiwanese Defense Ministry said, days after satellite imagery appeared to show the vessel had traveled to a military port following training operations at sea.

Taiwan's military "closely monitored its movements using joint intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities," the ministry said in a brief statement, releasing a blurry black-and-white image of the vessel but providing no details on where the photograph was taken.

Over 75% of adults in global survey have no confidence in Trump

WASHINGTON - An average of 76 percent of adults surveyed in 35 countries, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, have no confidence in U.S. President Donald Trump's leadership of global affairs, with ratings for the United States negative in many places in Europe and Asia, an established research institute said Tuesday.

Pew Research Center, which did not ask people in the United States, found that a majority in only five countries surveyed -- the Philippines, Israel, Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana -- rated Trump favorably.

Japanese man suspected of senior role in "Luffy" syndicate nabbed in Manila

MANILA - Philippine authorities detained on Tuesday a Japanese man wanted by Tokyo authorities over thefts and who is also suspected of being a senior member of the crime ring that used monikers such as "Luffy" and orchestrated robberies across Japan, sources knowledgeable about the case told Kyodo News.

Immigration officers and police operatives apprehended Hideharu Inoue, 56, at a rented condominium in Manila's Makati business district after intelligence officials confirmed his identity, the sources said. He was carrying fake Philippine government-issued identification cards bearing a fictitious name.

Football: Injured Kubo to stay sidelined as Japan faces Sweden

NASHVILLE, Tennessee - Injured star Takefusa Kubo will remain sidelined for Japan when they take on Sweden in their final Group F match at the World Cup on Thursday.

A Japan Football Association spokesperson said Tuesday that the 25-year-old is still nursing the left knee injury that ruled him out of Japan's 4-0 win over Tunisia in their second match on Saturday in Monterrey, Mexico.
