TOKYO - East Japan Railway Co. on Tuesday launched a new digital payment service called "teppay" as the train operator aims to compete with rivals such as PayPay.
The service, using barcodes and QR codes, is integrated into the mobile app for the Suica, a smartcard used for public transportation and shopping.
The upper limit is set at 300,000 yen ($1,900) for teppay, compared with 20,000 for Suica alone, in the hopes of allowing users to purchase big items such as electronics and pay accommodation fees.
If linked to JR East's View Card credit card, users can make payments up to the card's limit without the need to charge it with money first.
