BIRMINGHAM, England - Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki delivered a standout performance for Aston Villa in a 2-1 victory over previously undefeated Manchester City in the English Premier League on Saturday.
The 24-year-old made a string of fine saves at Villa Park against a high-powered City attack that attempted 15 shots, with seven on target.
"I've been growing little by little," Suzuki said. "I wanted to put that to the test."
Manager Unai Emery's Villa took the lead through an early Nicolas Jackson goal before coming under sustained attack from the visitors.
Erling Haaland headed an equalizer in the 52nd minute, but Suzuki kept City scoreless the rest of the game.
He produced an outstanding fingertip save to stop a close-range effort from Josko Gvardiol shortly before Jackson put the hosts back in front with his second.
In his post-match interview, Emery lauded Suzuki for his attitude and ability to adapt to a new system since transferring from Italy's Parma in the summer.
"He's ambitious. I think it's very important, his mentality," the Spanish tactician said. "So, we are very, very impressed how he adapted so quick with us."
