EINDHOVEN, Netherlands - Japan midfielder Kodai Sano scored his first Champions League goal Wednesday as PSV Eindhoven of the Dutch Eredivisie suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Belgium's Club Brugge.
In the 54th minute, Sano picked up a loose ball and fired a shot that deflected off an opponent and bounced in off the post, tying the game at 1-1 at PSV Stadion.
"I pushed it in with sheer determination," the 23-year-old, the younger brother of Japan and Mainz midfielder Kaishu Sano, said.
Although PSV lost the closely contested match, Sano was satisfied at least with his goal, saying, "I was able to score on the stage I had always dreamed of."
It was the second straight match for Sano to find the net following Saturday's Dutch league game, and he remains hungry for more goals. "I need to get into those areas more often," he said.
