- Japan saw the number of people with serious symptoms of coronavirus hit a record 462, the health ministry said Sunday, as the country grapples with a recent resurgence of the virus.

- Tokyo on Saturday kicked off a 20-day period during which restaurants that serve alcohol and karaoke venues have been asked by the metropolitan government to shorten business hours to help combat a recent resurgence of coronavirus infections.
- The government is considering making private health insurance coverage compulsory for overseas visitors to next summer's postponed Tokyo Olympics, sources familiar with the plan said Friday.
