TOKYO - Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's official car was upgraded Monday from the sedan to the sport utility vehicle version of Toyota Motor Corp.'s Century.
The luxury chauffeur-driven vehicle made its debut on Monday morning, carrying Takaichi from the prime minister's office to the nearby National Diet Building in Tokyo's Nagatacho political district.
Asked during a regular press conference how much the new vehicle had cost, Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara cited "security concerns" to refrain from disclosing its price tag, saying it could reveal "details about its capabilities and characteristics."
According to Toyota Motor, the Century SUV has a recommended starting price of 27 million yen ($167,000).
