CORTINA D'AMPEZZO, Italy - The Russian national anthem was heard at a Paralympics for the first time in 12 years on Monday, after alpine skier Varvara Voronchikhina won her country's first gold at the Milan Cortina Paralympic Winter Games in the women's super-G standing.
The crowd greeted the 23-year-old with polite applause and scattered cheers as she received her medal at the Tofane Alpine Skiing Center. She appeared visibly moved as she looked toward her country's flag and sang along to the State Anthem of the Russian Federation.
