VERONA, Italy - The Milan Cortina Paralympic Winter Games began Friday with an opening ceremony marking 50 years of the competition, while political tensions over Russian and Belarusian participation and logistical challenges limited athlete attendance.

Held at an accessibility-enhanced Verona Arena -- a nearly 2,000-year-old Roman amphitheater and the first UNESCO World Heritage site to host a Paralympic opening ceremony -- the show ushered in the start of the games, which run through March 15.
